Here’s the 6-day road trip itinerary we designed and followed during our adventure through the stunning landscapes of Montenegro

Day 1 – Arrival in Podgorica (Evening)

Arrive in Podgorica collect the rental car at the airport upon arrival and settle into your hotel. It saves time the next morning and gives you more flexibility. Most major rental providers operate from Podgorica Airport, so the process is usually quick and convenient. We personally used Discover Cars (Get €10 off on your first booking using my referral), and the experience was smooth and straightforward.

If you do pick up the car on arrival, make sure to check in advance whether your hotel offers on-site parking, as not all city accommodations have dedicated parking spaces.

If time allows, take a relaxed walk around the city centre, crossing the Millennium Bridge and heading up Gorica Hill for a quiet sunset view over the capital. Enjoy a simple local dinner and rest up for the road trip ahead.

Note: If you’re arriving in the morning or early afternoon, I’d recommend skipping Podgorica altogether - pick up your rental car at the airport and drive straight to Kotor or Budva to maximise your time experiencing the real beauty of Montenegro.

🛏️ Stay: Podgorica (1 night)

Day 2 – Budva, Sveti Stefan & Arrival in Kotor

Begin the day with a scenic drive to Budva (around 1 hour 20 minutes). Spend time exploring Budva’s charming Old Town, wandering through its narrow stone streets, and relaxing along the Adriatic beaches. Continue with a short drive to Sveti Stefan, where you can stroll along the pathways around the island, explore the surrounding areas, and enjoy the iconic postcard viewpoints of this famous resort. In the evening, head toward the Bay of Kotor and check into your accommodation in Kotor, ready to explore the bay the next day.

🛏️ Stay: Kotor (1 night)

Day 3 – Exploring the Bay of Kotor

Start the morning wandering through Kotor’s medieval Old Town before climbing up to the San Giovanni Fortress for breathtaking views over the bay. Access to the official city walls and fortress costs around €15 per person. However, there is an alternative hiking trail just outside the Old Town that you can use for free, offering beautiful views over Kotor Bay and a rewarding uphill walk. The views are stunning, though not quite as panoramic as those from the official city walls.

If you choose the free route, make sure to return the same way you entered  otherwise you may end up exiting through the paid section and be required to pay the €15 fee on your way down. Policies can change, but as of 2025, this alternative route was still free to access.

Later, drive to the elegant town of Perast and take a boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks island. In the afternoon, visit Tivat and stroll around Porto Montenegro’s luxury marina before returning to Kotor for a relaxed sunset by the waterfront.

🛏️ Stay: Kotor (2nd night)

Day 4 – Into the Mountains: Durmitor National Park

Leave the coast behind and drive inland toward Žabljak in Durmitor National Park (approximately 3.5–4 hours). The dramatic mountain scenery makes the journey part of the experience. In the afternoon, enjoy an easy and peaceful walk around Black Lake (Crno Jezero), surrounded by pine forests and towering peaks.

Day 5 – Tara Canyon & Kolašin

Visit the impressive Tara Bridge in the morning, where you can admire sweeping canyon views or even try the zipline. If time permits, explore more short trails within Durmitor before driving south to Kolašin (around 2 hours). Spend the evening unwinding in this peaceful mountain town, perhaps choosing a cozy guesthouse or spa hotel.

Day 6 – Biogradska Lake & Departure

Before heading back, visit Biogradska Lake, just 30 minutes from Kolašin, for a gentle morning walk around one of Montenegro’s most beautiful glacial lakes. Afterwards, drive to Podgorica Airport (around 1 hour 15 minutes), return your rental car, and prepare for your flight home.

The NC500 is a circular road trip around the northern tip of Scotland, starting and ending in Inverness. Created by the North Highland Initiative, it connects tiny coastal villages, epic mountain passes, and some of the most dramatic landscapes in the world.

You’ll pass:

• Fairy-tale castles like Dunrobin

• White-sand beaches such as Achmelvich & Balnakeil

• Cliffs so tall they swallow the horizon

• Single-track roads winding through mountains

• Quaint villages with whisky, seafood, and stories

🔥 Essential NC500 Tips (Must-Read Before You Go!)

1️⃣ Travel Anti-Clockwise if You’re a First-Timer

The route works both ways, but the experience changes:

• Clockwise: You start with rugged mountains and Applecross Pass early.

• Anti-clockwise: You warm up with gentler roads and build up to the narrow, challenging west coast.

Beginners often prefer anti-clockwise because the trickiest sections come later — once you’re more confident.

2️⃣ Book Accommodation Early (Especially Summer)

The NC500 has limited accommodation, and the small villages sell out months in advance.

Book early for:

• Hotels

• Inns and B&Bs

• Campsites

• Motorhome pitches

3️⃣ Don’t Rush  5–7 Days Minimum

Many travellers try to finish the NC500 in 2–3 days … and spend the whole time driving instead of experiencing.

Here’s a simple guide:

• 3 - 4 days: Too rushed unless you skip big sections

• 5 days: Covers highlights

• 7 days: Perfect balance

• 10+ days: Slow, peaceful trip with room for detours and hidden gems

The Highlands are meant to be savoured, not checked off.

4️⃣ Fuel Up Whenever You See a Station

Petrol stations are rare — especially on the northern stretch.
Some villages only have a single pump, and they close early.
Rule:
If your tank hits half, top it up.

5️⃣ Prepare for Single-Track Roads

A large part of the NC500 consists of narrow, single-lane roads with passing places.
It’s part of the charm you truly feel like you’re driving through untouched nature.

Tips:

• If someone behind is faster, use a passing place to let them go.

• Don’t stop in passing places for photos.

6️⃣ The Weather Will Change Every 15 Minutes

The Highlands have a personality of their own:

🏝️ 1. Durness & Balnakeil Beach

Balnakeil is one of Scotland’s finest beaches — a long stretch of white sand with turquoise water that looks unreal on sunny days. You’ll often share it only with the wind, a dog walker, or a few travellers.

Nearby is the Balnakeil Craft Village, a quirky place full of handmade crafts, art, and chocolates.

A short detour off the main road but totally worth it.
You’ll walk across a suspension bridge overlooking the rushing falls  especially powerful after rain.

Day 1: Inverness → Wick

Highlights:

• Dunrobin Castle

• Whaligoe Steps (crazy 330-step descent to an old harbour)

• Duncansby Stacks

• Famous signpost at John o’ Groats

It builds anticipation — coastal cliffs, dramatic landscapes, and the feeling that you're heading toward the edge of the map.

Day 2: Wick → Durness

Stops:

• Smoo Cave

• Balnakeil Beach

• Dunnet Head (the true north)

• Zipline over the ocean (if you dare)

This stretch feels remote and peaceful  long empty roads and rugged coastlines.

Day 3: Durness → Scourie → Ullapool

Highlights include:

• Assynt mountains (mystical silhouettes)

• Ardvreck Castle ruins

• Lochinver pies

• Knockan Crag (geology site explaining how old these mountains really are)

You’ll experience the wild heart of the Highlands.

Day 4: Ullapool → Gairloch

Stops:

• Corrieshalloch Gorge suspension bridge

• Mellon Udrigle Beach (hidden gem)

• Inverewe Gardens

• Gairloch viewpoints

This day mixes beaches, forests, and deep gorges  very different from the northern coast.

Day 5: Gairloch → Applecross

Highlights:

• Shieldaig village

This is the dramatic day — mountains, twisting roads, and jaw-dropping panoramas.

Day 6: Applecross → Inverness

Finish your loop by passing:

Tip: Download an aurora forecast app and keep a jacket handy  the aurora often appears when you least expect it.

2️⃣ Are RVs and Motorhomes Suitable for the NC500?

Yes, RVs and motorhomes can absolutely complete the NC500, but with some important considerations.

Pros:

• Total freedom

• Stay close to nature

• Cost-efficient compared to hotels in peak season

Challenges:

• Many sections are single-track roads  tight for large vehicles

• Passing places require patience and confidence

• Some steep, winding routes (especially Bealach na Bà) may be unsuitable for big motorhomes

• Limited parking in small villages

• Campsites fill up fast

3️⃣ Can I Wild Camp on the NC500?

Tent wild camping is allowed, but motorhome/van roadside parking is restricted.

Allowed (Tents Only):

• Small tents

• Short stays (1–2 nights)

• Far from houses, farms, and fenced land

Not Allowed:

• Parking overnight in lay-bys

• Sleeping in your car at the roadside

• Pitching tents beside roads, beaches with signage, or private land

Motorhomes must use:

Most of the buildings here are made from Cotswold stone a warm, honey-colored limestone that glows differently depending on the time of day. Some cottages date back to the 1300s, and walking past them feels like flipping through a living history book.

• By train: From London Paddington, you can hop on a train to Moreton-in-Marsh or Kemble both great starting points.

• By car: Driving gives you freedom to explore hidden gems. The roads are scenic but narrow, so take it slow.

• Parking: Most villages have public car parks, but places like Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water fill up fast. Arrive early or aim for shoulder seasons.

🏡 Villages That Stole My Heart

Let me walk you through a few that truly felt like stepping into a fairytale:

📸 Bibury

This was my first stop and wow. Arlington Row is probably the most photographed street in England, and for good reason. The cottages are tiny, crooked, and impossibly charming. There's a trout farm nearby, and the river Coln runs right through the village, adding to the serenity.

🌊 Bourton-on-the-Water

They call it the “Venice of the Cotswolds,” and it’s easy to see why. A gentle stream flows through the village, crossed by low stone bridges. Families picnic on the grassy banks, and ducks waddle past like locals. There’s a model village here a tiny replica of Bourton itself!

🏰 Castle Combe

This one felt like a movie set. No modern signs, no satellite dishes just pure, untouched beauty. It’s been featured in films like War Horse and Stardust. The market cross and old water pump in the center are straight out of medieval England.

🛍️ Stow-on-the-Wold

If you love antiques, this is your spot. The market square is surrounded by cozy shops and tea rooms. Look out for the ancient door at St. Edward’s Church it’s said to have inspired Tolkien’s Doors of Durin in The Lord of the Rings.

🏞️ Upper & Lower Slaughter: Quiet Beauty

Despite their dramatic names (from the Old English "slough", meaning muddy place), Upper and Lower Slaughter are two of the most peaceful and picturesque villages in the Cotswolds

Lower Slaughter Set along the River Eye, this village is postcard-perfect with stone bridges, a historic watermill, and golden cottages. It’s ideal for a slow stroll and quiet photos.

Upper Slaughter Even quieter than its neighbor, Upper Slaughter is known as a “Thankful Village” for losing no soldiers in WWI. No shops or pubs—just timeless charm and a lovely church.

You can walk between the two in about 20 minutes along a scenic footpath. It’s a perfect detour if you’re craving calm and authenticity.

🎨 Chipping Campden

This village has a more refined feel, thanks to its Arts & Crafts heritage. The High Street is lined with elegant buildings, and the wool church here is breathtaking. It’s also a great base for walking trails.

The Cotswolds is full of beautiful spots to eat many tucked inside centuries-old buildings with crackling fireplaces, stone walls, and candlelit corners. The Fox Inn, Broadwell A proper country pub with roaring fires, seasonal British dishes, and legendary sticky toffee pudding. It’s the kind of place where muddy boots are welcome and the portions are generous.

The Bull, Charlbury Michelin Bib Gourmand winner tucked inside a 16th-century inn. Think venison pie, local ales, and candlelit charm. It’s cozy, refined, and full of old-world atmosphere.

The Mason’s Arms, Bampton Perfect for Sunday roasts and a pint after a countryside walk. Dog-friendly, full of character, and always buzzing with locals.

The Wild Rabbit, Kingham An upscale gastropub with a rustic-chic vibe. The interiors are stunning think exposed beams and designer touches. Great for special occasions or a splurge-worthy dinner.

The Bell at Sapperton A hidden gem near Cirencester with a garden terrace and a locally sourced menu. Ideal for a relaxed lunch between village hops.

The Swan, Southrop Elegant yet cozy, with a menu that changes with the seasons. Their garden is dreamy in spring, and the interiors feel like a country manor.

That said, some of the more stylish or award-winning spots can feel a bit pricey for budget travelers especially in peak season. If you’re watching your spend, look for lunch deals or stick to simpler village pubs.

Reservations are recommended for weekends and holidays, especially in popular spots like Bourton-on-the-Water or Castle Combe.
